Strategic Planning

Home Planning Design Financing

Every Utility Needs a Long-Range Plan.

Laying the foundation for long-range decisions and policies is an essential step in utility success.  Having a thorough strategic plan helps in rallying the much-needed support from your customers, community, leaders, and regulatory bodies.  The plan can be your most important asset in obtaining financing.  Strategic plans are long-range, and typically cover periods of 20 years or longer.  A typical strategic planning process:

  • Usually starts with a “vision” of your community’s future and a statement of your mission - or  how you will achieve that vision.

  • Takes an in-depth look at the existing situation and listens carefully to “stakeholders” who can help or hinder the plan’s success.

  • Brings out all the ideas that you and the other stakeholders can think of.

  • Lays out major programs, their costs, and their implementation schedules.

  • Demonstrates the advantages of implementing the plan.

  • Identifies actions that are critical for the plan’s success.

  • Identifies who must take critical actions and when they must do so.

The strategic plan must be your ideas, your knowledge, your decisions – not your consultant’s.  So how does Envirosmith fit into the planning process?  As your consultant, Envirosmith brings experience, knowledge , and a fresh, impartial view of the situation.  We will:

  • Guide the process

  •  Assess the present situation realistically

  •  Involve stakeholders constructively

  • Recognize and address good ideas

  • Generate our own good ideas

  •  Add technical expertise

  •  Identify viable options, their costs, schedules, and prerequisites

  •  Develop the comprehensive plan

  •  Make the plan presentable – for use as a decision guide, a communications tool, and a sales document
